FAQ's

Buying & shopping

The key difference is fragrance oil concentration. Eau de Parfum (EDP) contains 15–20% fragrance oil, giving you a richer, longer-lasting scent — typically 6–8 hours. Eau de Toilette (EDT) contains 5–15%, making it lighter and fresher but shorter-lived (3–5 hours). For UK weather, an EDP is often a better investment as cooler temperatures mean scents don't project as freely.

Yes, if you shop wisely. We recommend ordering a sample or discovery set first before committing to a full bottle. Read detailed fragrance notes and user reviews. At Oud & Bloom, our product descriptions break down top, heart and base notes so you can make an informed choice. Most returns occur because shoppers skip the sample stage.

Please check our current shipping policy on the website for the latest delivery thresholds and options. We ship across mainland UK and aim for fast, tracked dispatch. Fragrance orders are packaged securely to prevent leakage or breakage in transit.

Oud & niche fragrance

Oud (also called agarwood) is a dark, resinous heartwood produced when the Aquilaria tree becomes infected with a specific mould. The tree produces a rich, aromatic resin to defend itself — and only around 2% of trees produce it naturally. This rarity, combined with centuries of cultural significance across the Middle East, South Asia and now the West, makes oud one of the most precious fragrance ingredients in the world — sometimes called "liquid gold."

Oud is complex and multi-layered — it can smell woody, smoky, sweet, leathery, and earthy all at once. The exact character depends on origin: Indian oud tends to be deeper and more animalic, while Cambodian oud is sweeter and more floral. Many describe it as having a warm, rich, almost medicinal depth. At Oud & Bloom we pair oud with florals and spices to create wearable, modern interpretations.

Absolutely. Oud can seem intimidating at first, but many of our blends are crafted specifically to ease new wearers into the world of oud. We balance the smokier, heavier oud notes with fresh florals, soft musks or citrus top notes. Start with our lighter oud-floral blends and work your way up to more concentrated oud attars.

Choosing the right scent

Start by identifying the scent families you naturally gravitate toward — floral, woody, oriental, fresh, or gourmand. Think about when and where you'll wear it: the office, an evening out, or everyday wear. Also consider the season — heavier, warmer scents work well in autumn/winter, while lighter, citrus-led fragrances are ideal for British summers. Try our discovery sets to explore multiple profiles before committing.

The UK's cooler, damper climate means fragrances don't project as strongly as in warmer countries. Richer, warmer scents — such as amber, oud, sandalwood, and vanilla — work beautifully in British autumn and winter, as they develop slowly and intimately on the skin. For spring and summer, opt for light florals, aquatics, or fresh citrus. Higher concentration (EDP or Extrait) also helps in colder months.

Yes, entirely. Fragrance has no gender — the labels "for him" and "for her" are marketing conventions, not rules. Gender-neutral and unisex fragrances are one of the biggest trends in the UK right now. Many of our oud and woody blends are loved equally by men and women. Wear what makes you feel confident and comfortable.

Fragrance notes are the individual scent layers that unfold over time. Top notes are what you smell first (citrus, herbs) — they last 10–15 minutes. Heart (middle) notes form the core of the fragrance (floral, spice, oud) and last for several hours. Base notes are the foundation that lingers longest (sandalwood, musk, amber). Together they create the fragrance's full character.

Sillage (pronounced "see-yazh") is the trail or wake a fragrance leaves behind as you move. A high-sillage fragrance projects strongly and others notice it. A low-sillage scent is more intimate and skin-close. Many UK shoppers prefer moderate sillage for the workplace, saving higher sillage scents for evenings or special occasions.

Longevity & wearing

Dry skin absorbs fragrance faster, reducing longevity. Before applying perfume, moisturise with an unscented lotion or layer with a matching body cream. Apply to pulse points (wrists, neck, inner elbows) where body heat helps project the scent. Avoid rubbing wrists together after application — this breaks down the fragrance molecules. Also consider moving to an EDP or Extrait concentration for longer wear.

Apply fragrance to your pulse points — areas where blood vessels are close to the skin and generate heat. Key spots include the wrists, neck, behind the ears, inner elbows, and the back of the knees. Spraying into your hair also helps fragrance linger throughout the day as hair holds scent well and releases it with movement. Spray from about 15–20 cm away for an even distribution.

Yes — layering (also called "fragrance wardrobe" building) is a growing trend in the UK. Apply a lighter, fresher scent as your base layer, then add a richer or oud-based fragrance on top. Vanilla pairs beautifully with almost anything. Our Oud & Bloom blends are designed to work harmoniously together, so you can mix and match to create your own signature combination.

This is called olfactory adaptation (sometimes informally called "nose blindness"). Your brain becomes so familiar with a scent that it stops registering it as a new signal — a survival mechanism so your nose can focus on detecting new, potentially important smells. Others around you will still smell your perfume perfectly well. This is totally normal and doesn't mean the fragrance has worn off.

Storage & shelf life

Store fragrances in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight, heat, and humidity. A bedroom drawer or wardrobe shelf is ideal. Avoid windowsills and bathrooms — steam and temperature fluctuations degrade the fragrance. Keep the bottle tightly closed to minimise oxidation. The less air in the bottle, the faster oxidation occurs, so use it more frequently as the bottle empties.

Most fragrances have a shelf life of 3–5 years when stored properly and unopened. Once opened, use within 1–3 years for best quality. Oud-based and oriental fragrances often age beautifully and can last even longer, as their rich base notes are naturally more stable. Signs of deterioration include a change in colour (yellowing or darkening), an off or vinegary smell, or a loss of the original scent character.

In hand luggage, UK airport security follows the 100ml liquid rule — any fragrance bottle must be 100ml or under and placed in a clear, resealable plastic bag (max 1 litre). Larger bottles must go in your checked hold luggage. Note that perfume is classified as a flammable liquid, so airlines may have specific rules — always check with your carrier before travelling.

Gifting & special occasions

For a luxury fragrance gift, consider an oud-based or oriental perfume — these are associated with richness and prestige. A gift set or discovery collection is ideal if you're unsure of their taste, as it lets them explore multiple scents. Oud & Bloom's gift sets are beautifully packaged and make a striking, memorable present for birthdays, anniversaries, Eid, or Christmas.

Fragrance is one of the most popular gift choices in the UK. It's personal, luxurious, and long-lasting. Oud and Arabic-inspired fragrances are especially popular as Eid gifts, with their rich, warm character perfectly suited to the celebration. For Christmas, warmer oriental and spiced fragrances are particularly beloved. Our gift wrapping and personalised messaging options make the experience even more special.

If you already know a fragrance they love, buy the same or a "flanker" — a related scent from the same family. Otherwise, a discovery/sample set is the safest and most thoughtful option, as it lets them find their own favourite without the risk of wasting a full bottle. Soft florals, clean musks, and light ouds tend to appeal across a wide range of people.

Attar (also spelled itr or ittar) is a traditional concentrated perfume oil with no alcohol — rooted in Arabic, Persian, and South Asian perfumery. Applied directly to the skin with a rollerball or stopper, a single drop can last all day. Unlike spray perfumes, attars are alcohol-free making them ideal for those with skin sensitivity, and they are permitted during religious worship. Oud & Bloom offers a curated selection of authentic attars.
